Data centers have been around for years, but until recently, most people did not pay much attention to them. That has changed as cloud computing and artificial intelligence have increased the need for data centers and the infrastructure that supports them.

More data centers are now being built across the country, and some are very large. In a few areas, dozens or even hundreds of facilities are concentrated in the same county. This has raised questions about what data centers mean for the communities where they are located.
