The Common Council is scheduled to consider supporting the legislation this Tuesday, February 1, 2022.

“Good cause eviction” legislation does not actually create any new affordable housing and will have drastic unintended consequences for both tenants and landlords. It will greatly disincentivize landlords from making much needed upgrades to their properties and will force small landlords to simply sell their properties, leading to larger corporations that are less attentive to the needs of tenants to buying those properties.

“Good cause eviction” is the wrong approach to affordability in housing in Buffalo. Local landlords continue to struggle financially as a result of the pandemic from non-payment of rent while building maintenance costs, property taxes, and utility payments increase.

The best way to keep tenants in their homes is for state lawmakers to focus on securing additional federal emergency rental assistance funds and making sure they are distributed as quickly as possible to tenants and landlords.
